The client

Soft Serve Studio is a full-service industrial design consultancy specialising in soft goods – anything made from fabric that isn’t clothing.

The deliverables

I helped Soft Serve Studio with a tagline, web copy, and a homepage banner video.

The challenge

SSS were a new player in a new market and defining their offering in accessible terms was exactly the kind of challenge I enjoy. They needed a tagline that spoke to their vision and also explained what they actually do because a lot of people don’t know what industrial designers do and even fewer know what soft goods are.

The solution

SSS were flat out busy with setting up a new business, building their website, and courting new clients so they wanted another brain to wrangle their copy. The core challenge with SSS was to translate their offering from niche terminology into plain language without oversimplifying things. It was important to them that their offering was accessible and comprehensible to people who don’t speak industrial designer as there are plenty of brands out there in dire need of their services who may not know it. And just as many who do speak industrial designer who we didn’t want to undersell or condescend. We wanted the copy to match the founders’ tone so I put the copy through a filter so it sounded honest, modest, and minimalist.

The Tagline

Form and function through fabric.

The brand story

We’re a passionate group of product designers, pattern makers and developers who genuinely care about clients and their projects. Our industry knowledge and flexible approach allows us to quickly connect the right people and tailor a team to suit each project.

Having cut their teeth at brands including Rip Curl, Ksubi and Crumpler, designers/mates Kaine Whiteway and Janis Lacey launched Soft Serve Studio – a full service soft goods design consultancy based in Melbourne, Australia.

Backed by years of experience building industry connections and supplier relationships, the duo saw an opportunity to help more brands make premium quality soft goods. Soft Serve emerged from the realisation that big brands need help with big ideas, while smaller brands often don’t have the resources for in-house product developers, designers and pattern-makers.
